Bobotie

1 lb. ground beef pinch of pepper
1 slice white bread juice of 1 lemon
1 cup milk 1 teaspoon brown sugar
2 chopped onions 12 crushed almonds (optional)
2 tablespoons butter 2 eggs
2 tablespoons mild curry powder 6 orange, lemon, or bay leaves
2 teaspoon salt
   

Soak bread in 1/2 cup milk, until soft, then mash with fork. Saute onion, add curry and seasonings, and cook for 2 minutes. Add lemon juice, bread, sugar, almonds, and ground beef. Cook until beef is browned, then transfer to a greased pie pan and smooth. Beat eggs and remaining milk, pour over meat. Arrange bay leaves on top and bake at 320 deg. F for 30 minutes. Serve with rice, chutney, sliced bananas and sambal, which is a tangy Malayan condiment. (4-6 servings)
