Boland Winery

The Boland winery is situated in the Paarl region which has a Mediterranean climate, annual rainfall and a variety of soil types. This creates an ideal environment for the cultivation of high quality wine grapes. Boland pressed its first grapes in 1948. It is built on a section of a farm Nieuwedrift, and initially this co-operative wine cellar served some 18 members. Today it has over 110 members who supply some 20,000 tons of grapes from a wide area surrounding the Paarl Valley, including Durbanville, Klipheuwel and Paardeberg. Varieties from each area are initially kept separate in the cellar.

Techniques for their white wines are long lees contact at low temperatures for more flavor and fuller body.

Boland was one of the first co-ops to invest in French Oak - capacity of 22,000 gallons, and this is a feature of their reds. New clones are an important part of their red wines.

Pinotage carries three Boland wines:

Cabernet Sauvignon

Pinotage

Port

The Cellar Master/General Manager is Altus le Roux, who states, "We are trying to create an estate within the cellar. By providing the services of a specialist viticulturist to the winegrowers and establishing a willingness to vinify small parcels, we are able to provide high quality wines in all the styles which the market demands."

Their quality driven efforts have been rewarded. Both the Boland Pinotage and their Cabernet Sauvignon were awarded silver medals at the 1997 World Wine Championships in Chicago.

Their back label features the African word "Bayete" meaning health/ prosperity.
